After a major garden makeover, Ingemar let the mower take a long and well-deserved rest. When Husqvarna’s competition was launched, he entered his old lawn care partner, and it turned out it was still going strong. Congratulations to Ingemar and a mower that truly proves what it means to be built to last.
The world’s oldest Husqvarna robotic lawn mower has been found
In 1995, Husqvarna introduced what is believed to be the world's first commercial robotic lawn mower, known as the Husqvarna Solar Mower. To celebrate three decades of robotic mowing, we launched a competition to find the world’s oldest Husqvarna robotic lawn mower still at work. The response was overwhelming. Thousands of submissions poured in, with owners sharing stories of mowers that had reliably mowed lawns across Europe for decades.

Built in 1995 and still going strong in 2025
Long before apps and AI entered our gardens, Husqvarna launched a robotic lawn mower that could operate on its own. 30 years after our Husqvarna Solar Mower revolutionised lawn care forever, one of those originals is still going strong. We found it in Motala, Sweden, and it has now been crowned the world's oldest Husqvarna robotic lawn mower. Meet the winner in our competition and discover the story of lasting innovation.
We have a winner
The world's oldest Husqvarna robotic lawn mower was discovered in Motala, Sweden, at the home of Ingemar Carlsson. He became interested in the Husqvarna Solar Mower back in 1995 after reading about it in a newspaper, and thanks to a lucky conversation with a Husqvarna dealer at a Christmas party, he got his hands on one. It then mowed his lawn flawlessly for over a decade, sparking curiosity from neighbours who had never seen anything like it.

“It has been absolutely incredible, and it still runs just like it always has. The only thing I have replaced is the cutting blades.”

Inventors of robotic mowing
This competition marked 30 years of world-leading robotic mowing and a reminder of what sets Husqvarna apart. From the first solar-powered model to today’s wire free robotic mowers, our products are built to perform and deliver excellent results year after year. It’s a legacy of innovation and durability, which continues to drive us forward.
30 years of innovation - key milestones
1995: Husqvarna released what we believe is the world´s first fully automated lawn mower, known as the solar mower or “the turtle”. It created news headlines all over the world and the level of interest was massive. The power supply with solar cells was unique for that time.
1998: The first commercial version of Husqvarna Automower robotic mower was introduced, known as the Solar Hybrid. This model was powered by a rechargeable battery and could mow lawns up to 500 square meters. It was equipped with several sensors that allowed it to navigate around obstacles and adjust its cutting pattern based on the terrain.
2003: The second generation of Husqvarna Automower was introduced. This platform featured a new design and several improvements, including models that could manage lawns up to 6000 square meters and a hybrid mower with both solar cells and battery.
2011: The 305 was the first Automower® from the 3rd generation; a front wheel drive mower with a small footprint and suitable for lawns up to 600m2.
2015: Husqvarna Automower 430X and 450X were introduced, both equipped with the X-line feature package including the Automower Connect app with GPS theft tracking, GPS-assisted navigation, LED headlights, front rubber bumper and X-line body design.
2018: Husqvarna introduced its first robotic mowers for green space professionals, the Husqvarna Automower 520 and 550. These models were designed for more robust tasks and featured professional controls for simplified interaction and remote control through Husqvarna Fleet Services.
2019: The first all-wheel drive robotic mowers were launched, including the Husqvarna Automower 435X AWD for residential customers and the Husqvarna Automower 535 AWD for professional customers. These models were designed to handle rough terrain and slopes with an incline of up to 70%. A normal black piste in a ski-slope is roughly 40-60% to compare.
2022: Husqvarna introduced the Husqvarna CEORA, a robotic lawn mower for commercial turf care, covering up to 75,000 square meters. This model featured a satellite-based solution for precision mowing without the need for physical wire.
2023: Husqvarna launched its first NERA robotic lawn mower models in early 2023. This new range allows for boundary wire-free operation in residential gardens and offers enhanced flexibility and precision in lawn care.
