Why isn’t my lawn mower grass collector filling properly?

There can be some instances when your Husqvarna lawn mower is not collecting grass properly. Find out why!

Poor grass collection is usually caused by either airflow blockage, incorrect cutting height or a dirty collector.

Below are the most common reasons why the grass collector on your walk-behind lawn mower may not be working as expected, and how to fix them.

Cutting height is set too high

When the cutting height is too high, the mower blades may not lift and throw the grass effectively into the collector.

Lowering the cutting height can import airflow and grass pickup.

How to adjust the cutting height

  • Locate the cutting height adjustment lever (location may vary depending on the model).
  • Lower the height in small increments and test the performance.
  • Follow the 1/3 rule: never cut more than one-third of the grass blade length at once.

CAUTION: Do not set the cutting height too low on uneven lawns—the blades may strike the ground and get damaged.

Grass clipping or debris blocking the cutting deck

A clogged cutting deck can prevent clippings from moving into the collector. Built-up grass, leaves or debris under the deck disrupts airflow, which reduces collection efficiency.

How to clean the cutting deck

  1. Turn off the lawn mower and remove the ignition cable from the spark plug, or remove the battery if you have a battery-powered lawn mower.
  2. Tilt the lawn mower. If you have a petrol lawn mower, make sure that the air filter and spark plug are facing up (to avoid engine damage).
  3. Clean the underside using a brush or low-pressure water hose.
  4. Let the deck dry completely before use.

WARNING: Use heavy-duty gloves. The blade is very sharp and cuts can easily occur.

WARNING: Do not use a high-pressure washer, it can damage the product.

Dirty or clogged grass collector

If the grass bag or collector is dirty or clogged, air cannot flow through it. This disrupts the vacuum effect needed to pull the grass in.

  • Empty the grass collector.
  • Shake out any stuck clippings on debris.
  • If needed, rinse the collector and let it dry completely before reinstalling it.

Bonus tip: Mow when the grass is dry

Wet grass tends to clump and stick to the inside of the mower deck and collector, reducing performance.

For best results, mow when your lawn is completely dry.
