How to update your Automower® firmware

Regular firmware updates for your Automower® robotic lawn mower ensure it performs optimally and benefits from new features, enhancements and security fixes. You can update the firmware yourself if your model supports Firmware Over The Air (FOTA).

What is firmware?

Firmware is the software that runs on your Automower® robotic lawn mower, controlling its functions and communication with other devices. Regular updates ensure your mower performs efficiently, with new features and fixes.

Updating firmware using FOTA (Firmware Over The Air)

Some Automower® models support FOTA, which allows you to wirelessly update your mower’s firmware using the Automower® Connect app. The update is done over Wi-Fi or mobile network, with no need for physical connections.

Here’s how to update your firmware using FOTA:

1. Requirements for using FOTA

Device requirements

  • An Automower® model that supports FOTA.
  • Ensure that the Check for firmware updates option is enabled in the Automower® Connect app (this is the default setting). To verify, go to: More > My mowers > Mower details > Overview.

Network requirements

  • Wi-Fi only models: Charging station must be within strong Wi-Fi range.
  • Wi-Fi and mobile connectivity models: Wi-Fi is not required, but having it can speed up the download process.

App requirements

  • Latest version of the Automower® Connect app is recommended.
  • Activate automatic updates in your mobile device’s app store to stay up to date without manual checks.

2. How to check your current firmware version

To verify your mower’s firmware version:

  • Open the Automower® Connect app.
  • Go to More > My mowers > Mower details > Overview.

3. How firmware downloads work

  • The mower automatically checks for updates once a week.
  • When an update is available, the download starts automatically.
  • The mower stays parked while the firmware is downloading (takes 1–4 hours).
  • If mowing is scheduled, the Automower® Connect app will notify you, and the mower will resume mowing once the download is complete.
  • On models with a display and jog wheel (Automower® Access), the download progress is visible on the mower’s display.
  • Note: For models with mobile connectivity, firmware downloads are included in the mower’s mobile data plan—no extra cost.

4. How to install the firmware update

Once the download is complete, you’ll receive a notification in the Automower® Connect app. To install:

  1. Ensure the mower is charged and parked.
  2. Tap Install in the notification (alternatively, go to More > My mowers > Mower details).
  3. Tap Install firmware update and wait for the update to complete.
  4. Once completed, tap Done.

The mower temporarily disconnects from the app during installation, but will reconnect automatically once the update is finished.

5. Track installation progress

You can monitor installation progress via:

  • The Automower® Connect app.
  • On models with a display and jog wheel (e.g., Automower® Access), you can also see the installation status on the mower’s display.

6. What to do if installation fails

If the update fails, try the following steps:

  1. Restart the mower.
  2. Reconnect using Bluetooth.
  3. Check the firmware version in the app: More > My mowers > Mower details.
  4. If the new version is installed, you’re all set. If not, try the installation again.

7. What’s included in the firmware update

For details on new features, enhancements and fixes in each update, refer to the specific update article for your model. These articles are published regularly with each firmware release.

What if I don’t update the Firmware?

You can continue using your mower without updating the firmware, but you’ll miss out on new features and enhancements. If the update contains important security fixes, the Automower® Connect app will automatically install the update for you.
