How to replace a pull cord on a chainsaw

While using your Husqvarna chainsaw, the starter rope can become damaged or even break. The motion of the pull cord being pulled against the pulleys and the chainsaw housing will eventually wear it out.

This can occur if you use the chainsaw:

  • in dusty conditions
  • in pine forests or on other types of trees with a lot of sap

Replace the pull cord if you notice the following:

  • a damaged pull cord handle
  • the starter rope is thinning
  • the cord length or diameter are incorrect
  • excessive buildup of sap or other dirt that cannot be cleaned

Replacing a pull cord on a chainsaw

What you will need:

  • protective eyewear
  • Protective gloves
  • new starter rope, length depending on your chainsaw model.
  • pliers

Method:

  1. Loosen the screws on the starter housing.
  2. Remove the starter housing.
  3. Pull the starter rope approximately 30 cm (12 in) and place it in the notch on the pulley.
  4. Let the pulley rotate slowly backwards to release the recoil spring.
  5. Remove the used starter rope from the handle and the pulley.
  6. Attach a new starter rope to the pulley.
  7. Pull the starter rope through the hole in the starter housing and the starter rope handle.
  8. Make a tight knot at the end of the starter rope.
  9. Tension the spring by winding the starter rope approximately 7 times around the pulley.
  10. Make sure that you can turn the pulley for a 1/2 turn after the starter rope is fully extended.
