How to level your lawn - helpful tips and advice
Do you have an uneven lawn in your garden? Here you will find plenty of helpful information, tips, and advice on how to level out your lawn.
Green, dense, and even – just as a lawn should be. Levelling out your lawn requires effort, but it is worth it. There are many reasons why holes and depressions appear. A garden is a living organism, and things happen all the time. Natural variations in the soil's composition and stability are one reason; excavations, vole tunnels, and molehills are others.
How to level out your uneven lawn
Levelling out your lawn is not difficult, but it requires patience, determination, and, not least, effort. Isolated, minor unevenness in the lawn is easy to correct. For smaller uneven areas, you can cut them into small squares, and for larger ones, cut a cross over the hole. It's easier to reach the right depth using an edging tool. Lift the turf, fill in with soil and/or sand, and replace the grass. Trample down and water. Raised areas in the lawn are easily removed with the corresponding technique, but instead of adding soil, you remove it.
Levelling out large depressions in stages
How to raise the level of a lawn if there are deep depressions? Then the levelling needs to be done in stages. Start by filling with sand or soil, then proceed to sowing and watering. If you use sand, remember that it should not be too fine; a slightly coarser grade is better. Let the grass grow a bit before adding the next layer and repeating the process. If the unevenness in your lawn is larger but not very deep, the best approach is to top-dress the lawn with sand/soil in layers of 1–3 cm, also in several stages. This way, you build up the lawn where it's needed. Just like when you level out deep depressions, let the grass grow a bit before adding the next layer. Learn more about how to top-dress your lawn.
