How to cut down or fell a tree using a chainsaw safely
Cutting down a tree, also known as felling a tree, requires careful planning and a high degree of skill. It’s a potentially dangerous job that’s best left to trained professionals. However, if the tree is a manageable size, you may choose to tackle the job yourself. Watch the following video to learn how to cut down a tree safely and efficiently.
As the video demonstrates, when you’re using a chainsaw to fell a tree, it’s important to plan carefully. First and foremost, verify your Husqvarna saw has fresh oil, along with a new or sharpened chain. Additionally, you’ll want to invest in personal protection equipment, including gloves, ear and eye protection, chainsaw chaps and a helmet with a face shield.
Secondly, look out for obstacles in the surrounding area, such as vegetation, power lines, buildings or fences. You always want a felled tree to reach the ground unobstructed.
Thirdly, examine the condition of the tree. Is there a dead or decayed section that could break off? Are there any loose branches? Keep an eye out for vines that could interfere with the fall, or might pull debris from nearby trees.
Next, plan out the tree’s fall. Keep in mind that most trees have a natural direction of fall, which is affected by their lean, size and shape. Calculations and a careful assessment must be made prior to any cutting.
Finally, and perhaps most importantly, you must form a plan of action. What will be your path of retreat when the tree falls? Where will your helpers or crew members stand? These are important details, and they should be communicated clearly. Clear away any surrounding brush or vegetation as needed.
