Why does a chainsaw start and then stop working?

While working with your Husqvarna chainsaw, you may experience it shutting down.

Chainsaw starts and then stops working

If you experience your chainsaw dying right after you have started it, there could be a few different issues

Fill the chainsaw with fuel

Make sure that the product is filled with fuel and start the chainsaw.

Old or stale fuel

When storing your chainsaw over a short period of time, fuel may become stale.

If the product is stored with fuel in it, the fuel can become stale over time. This will result in the system becoming clogged or restricted.

NOTE: Fuel-related failures are not covered under warranty. The product would need to be serviced by a local authorised service centre.

Before storing your chainsaw, make sure that there is no fuel in it to prevent this sort of issue. Always use fresh fuel when you start using your chainsaw.

If your chainsaw still starts and then stops working, check the air filter. Clean or replace the air filter if it is dirty or damaged.

Dirty or clogged spark arrestor

In this case, clean the spark arrestor.

Chainsaw stalls or stops working when turned sideways

If your chainsaw shuts down when turned sideways, it is usually because the fuel filter is held away from the fuel, as the position of the chainsaw has changed. The fuel filter must be able to stay in the fuel as the position of the chainsaw is changed.

Husqvarna chainsaws are equipped with fuel lines of specified lengths and flexibility along with weighted fuel filters. This allows the filter to “follow” the fuel and remain submerged. It is important to always use the correct fuel line and fuel filter for your specific chainsaw. You can find this information in the operator’s manual.

Your chainsaw can also shut down when turned sideways due to leakage or because the fuel lines need to be reset. In this case, please contact your local authorised dealer.
