How and when to change cutting blades on your Automower® robotic lawn mower

This guide will help you understand how and when to change cutting blades on your Automower® robotic lawn mower to maintain optimal cutting performance.

Recognising when to change blades

When the cutting blades on your Automower® robotic lawn mower show signs of wear or damage, or when the grass tips appear frayed and whitened after cutting, it is time to replace the blades to ensure safe operation and good cutting results.

Use original Husqvarna blades and screws

Always use genuine blades and screws from Husqvarna. Remember to replace the screws when changing blades. Worn screws may cause the blade to come loose during operation.

Step-by-step guide to changing blades

This video shows how to replace cutting blades on an Automower® robotic lawn mower. The detailed steps are also described below.

Follow these steps to change blades:

  1. Put on protective gloves.
  2. Set the mower's main switch to OFF.
  3. Turn the robotic lawn mower upside down on a clean and soft surface to avoid scratches on the cover.
  4. Rotate the skid plate until the hole on the plate aligns with the blade screw.
  5. Unscrew the blade using a straight or cross-tip screwdriver, preferably magnetic for easier removal.
  6. Clean any dirt using a brush and a soft damp cloth.
  7. Attach the new blade with a new screw.
  8. Be careful to only use one blade with each screw to avoid the cutting system becoming imbalanced.
  9. Verify that the blades spin freely.

Main blade disc and EdgeCut disc

  • A main blade disc is available for all Automower® robotic lawn mowers (left side in the illustration below).
  • An EdgeCut disc is only available for Automower® robotic lawn mowers equipped with EdgeCut (right side in the illustration below). Learn more about EdgeCut here.
  • The procedure for changing blades is the same for both blade discs.

Lifespan of Automower® cutting blades

  • Main disc blades have a lifespan ranging from 3 to 6 weeks.
  • EdgeCut disc blades usually last between 9 to 12 weeks, as they are only active during edge cutting.

Different factors can cause the blades to become worn or damaged faster than the durations mentioned above, such as blade model, operating time, work area size, grass type, seasonal growth, type of soil, the use of fertiliser or the presence of objects (cones, toys, tools, stones, roots etc.).

Seasonal considerations

During spring, the grass grows fast and contains a lot of sap that can build up on the blades. We recommend that you check the blades frequently and, if necessary, replace them more often during this period.

Impact of dull blades on your Automower robotic lawn mower®

Operating your Automower® robotic lawn mower with dull blades compromises its performance, leading to uneven grass cuts, increased energy consumption and reduced mowing coverage.
